Diabetic Foot Hygiene

Diabetes is more than an ailment and to date, no sufficient treatments have been found to cure the disease, therefore foot care becomes a part and parcel of a diabetic patient's life, as the feet are the most delicate and weak part in any diabetic person. Follows are ten quick suggested foot-hygiene tips to help keep the diabetic foot healthy:

  • Have your doctor check your feet regularly.

  • Wear the right kind of shoes, socks that are specially designed for diabetic. The insoles should be soft and snug.

  • Use the help of a foot mirror to examine your feet for cuts or cracks. Thoroughly examine the underside of the feet.

  • If there is any kind of wound or a blister then treat it immediately. Seek the help of the physician or your foot care specialist as open wounds may worsen the condition.

  • Maintenance of the feet is mandatory. Use the soap that is mild and gentle and wash with Luke warm water.

  • Do NOT scrub or treat your feet harshly.. be gentle.

  • Hot packs and pads and hot water soaks are not good. One might harm the feet unknowingly. Avoid extreme temperature pads for feet.

  • Keep the nails trimmed and massage them with a good quality moisturizer or cream.

  • Athlete's foot is a common phenomenon among diabetic. If you are suffering from one then wear a different pair of shoe every day. See that the shoe dries out completely before you wear them. Also do not forget to wear good quality absorbent socks.

  • In extreme case of corns, calluses seek proper treatment. Never try to cut or trim the effected area. As you may aggravate the problem, seek the help of a podiatrist.

  • The circulation can be improved by correct massage techniques. Try to massage your foot, legs and toes daily at least once.

  • Educate yourself with the foot ailments and treat immediately whenever there is some discomfort or problem.
